I'M A STORYTELLER N' I'M OHHKAYY, I SLEEP ALL NIGHT N' I LIE ALL DAYYY

After decades of ricocheting through media fields as fast as they’re invented, I’ve settled on “STORYTELLER” as my designation. It covers all the bases of every media, teaching, and my community/political activities as well. It also commands the pivotal spot in dealing with the most serious and most fun aspects that life has to offer.

Storytelling is the structure that humans have used since cave dwelling days:

• to best comprehend life and/or a series of events

• to remember, internalize, information

• to communicate, express, that comprehension and information

This covers worklife activities as well as creative, personal expression. Storytelling principles can be used in basic communication situations, like job interviews, to get better results.

COMMUNITY

In 1999, after decades of beating this drum, and establishing storytelling as a required core course at the Center for Electronic Arts in San Francisco, I ran across a notice for the Digital Storytelling Festival in Wired magazine. There's a GANG of believers? Awwrigght! I became a guest speaker and fell in with an international community of fascinatingly creative people, while freezing my butt off and enduring altitude sickness in Crested Butte, Colorado.

Currently on the Advisory Board, I thoroughly enjoyed this year's event at KQED in congenial, sea-level San Francisco: The Digital Storytelling Festival www.dstory.com

Leena Pendharkar and I gave a reallyreally fast presentation contrasting digital storytelling for self expression and for purposes of persuasion, including a Post-Its excercise. The interactive Quicktime movie of its content can be clicked through: STORYTELLING BASICS

Storytelling links can be found at the bottom of this page.

For an extraordinary experience, learn how to unleash your personal storyteller at the workshops given at The Center for Digital Storytelling www.storycenter.org

Best of all, join The Digital Storytelling Association http://www.dsaweb.org/

If you're interested, you can take my class on storytelling at San Francisco State's Multimedia Studies Program:

Storytelling is the core of communication. All forms of expression tell a story, even an illustration or a web page. Writers, artists and business people are storytellers - both in their creations and in their encounters with clients, colleagues, or employers. (Pixar has listed this as their first requirement for employment.) We'll explore the essential storytelling elements, critical analysis, investigative listening, and presentation techniques to train students in creating powerfully dynamic personal work as well as communicate effectively in the workplace. Lectures, video, graphics presentations, role playing, and group discussion. Each student will create graphics with story content. You'll learn to express yourself clearly in your creations and in your career.
